A3 2027

The A3 has been reborn. When the original A3 arrived in 2017, it changed what a Magico loudspeaker could be, bringing the engineering, materials, and sonic performance for which Magico was known to a far wider audience. Nine years later, Magico has returned to its most attainable floorstanding loudspeaker and refined every element. The A3 2027 is a three-way, four-driver design. New cabinet. New drivers. New crossover. Nothing was carried forward simply because it had worked before.

Measured Against the Flagship

The A3 2027 benefits from measurement and verification technologies first used in the development of the M9. A Laser Vibrometer was employed to measure cabinet-panel vibration and calculate the sound-pressure levels generated by the structure, allowing Magico engineers to precisely target bracing and damping and then verify the results. A Near-Field Scanner (NFS) robot was used to optimize the loudspeaker’s acoustic output through measurements across the entire three-dimensional sphere surrounding the A3 2027. This provides a complete view of on- and off-axis response and a level of data-driven optimization beyond what was possible with the original A3.

Engineered Silence

The A3 2027 features constrained-layer damping (CLD), a technique proven highly effective throughout the S Series, incorporated into a cabinet whose bracing and bolt placement were structurally fine-tuned using measured data. Magico found that the precise location of each brace and the points at which the enclosure is clamped have a significant effect on the noise radiated by the cabinet. The result is a dramatically quieter structure with less cabinet-borne signature. The enclosure has also been completely refined aesthetically: every vertical edge is radiused, and the top plate rolls into the sides. A precision-machined base follows the same radiused geometry and is supported by footers custom-designed for the A3 2027.

Drivers and Crossover

Every drive unit in the A3 2027 is new and was designed, modeled, and built specifically for this loudspeaker. The 5-inch midrange and two 7-inch bass drivers use Magico’s latest cone technology, built around aluminum-honeycomb cores sandwiched between carbon-fiber skins. The combination provides an ideal balance of thickness, light weight, stiffness, and custom formability, while pushing distortion and intermodulation distortion lower. The 28mm pure-beryllium tweeter employs an optimized dome geometry and a customized neodymium-based motor with extended linear voice-coil movement, greater power handling, and low distortion. The A3 2027’s three-way Elliptical Symmetry Crossover uses an acoustical-target 24dB Linkwitz-Riley slope to maximize frequency and phase linearity while minimizing intermodulation distortion.

The Way In

The culmination of this development program is the A3 2027: the measurement tools of the M9, new cone technology introduced to the A3 for the first time, a dramatically refined cabinet, and a completely new drive-unit and crossover system—concentrated into the loudspeaker that has always been Magico’s way in.
